What is sport psychology?

Sport Psychology has been around since the early 1900’s helping people perform at their best. Sport Psychology helps limit the number of ‘off’ days you have by ensuring you have the mental strength to compete at your best. Some of the concepts include: being present focused, finding and maximizing your confidence, understanding and controlling your self-talk, regulating your arousal levels, and finding motivation even when you just don’t feel like doing it. This is a small sample of topics addressed in the field of sport psychology.

How many sessions does it take?

I get this answer quite a lot, and there is no perfect answer. I would say on average athletes work with Nick between three and eight times.

Can i sit-in with my child?

For the initial consultation, I think that would be appropriate. After that, the athlete should have a space to speak freely and have some confidentiality. What I tell parents though because they are interested in their child’s success is that I will give them a 30,000 foot view of what we are covering. You can get an update weekly or after a few sessions. There are times that we do “field work” where we have a session on the field or court and parents are welcome to be a part of those sessions.

Do you accept FSA/HSA?

Unfortunately not. My services are categorized under athletic coaching, so, therefore, I can’t accept FSA/HSA.

Do you travel to be with athletes?

Yes, I can/will travel to be with athletes for specialized training events, practices, and/or to be with them at games and tournaments. My fees are $600 per day plus travel costs.

When will I notice an improvement?

This will differ for every person, but I’ve always given this analogy, my wife is in the medical field, she knows that if she gives you 50 cc’s of a particular drug, your blood pressure will drop by this amount. Unfortunately, I can’t give you 50 cc’s of optimism and watch your positivity grow tenfold. We have to work together to find what works best for you over time. There is no magic pill for increasing grit.

Is working with a cognitive performance coach for everyone?

Absolutely. There is a mental component to competing that every athlete has. We all have thoughts that are working for us and working against us. Some people may have more days where their thoughts are working for them, but we all have days that we’re not 100%. Also, a lot of what I cover can be classified as good life skills that can help everyone increase their resilience as they go through life.

do you offer appointments online?

Yes, technology has now made it possible where we can have an appointment from anywhere in the world. I work with FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom.

Is there an age requirement?

Nick works with athletes 16 and older.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel/reschedule up to 12 hours in advance with no penalty. If you need to cancel an appointment within the 12-hour window, I’ll give you one “free pass.” No shows and late cancellations will be charged a $40 fee.

Do you treat mental illness?

No. I am a Cognitive Performance Coach working in the field of sport psychology. I do not treat mental illnesses like eating disorders or clinical depression. I do have a network of referrals that I can make, and we often work in tandem with each other to provide high-quality care for the athlete.
